Faces of Brugge - Michiel Michielsen

Michiel Michielsen

Meeting Michiel:

I first met Mikey when booking a private boat with his city boat tour company for an engagement/proposal photo shoot, although getting those two kids on their way was only the start of the story with this fella and yours truly...

Since that day I've gotten to know Mikey as one of the most thoughtful and kind fellows in this fine city, even to the point that he puts up with yours truly dropping by to babble his ear off (and vice versa) by the Vismarkt whenever the mood and time permits.

Mikey is a top dude and one of the best of Brugge: Cares about his home city profoundly whether on the boat or in the ticketing booth or on his own time, perhaps the only person in the 2018 local elections on the ballot (Open VLD+ #23) that I can 100% trust for the vote.

See you around... Mister box buddy! ;p

Michiel rides the canals of Brugge

Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.

My name is Michiel Michielsens, son of Jos, grandson of Maurice and great-grandchild of Jozef Michielsens. By now already the 4th generation that operates the shipping company BVBA Venice of the North.

My goal in life (and with "Pisces" as my sign) is to help others, sometimes at the expense of myself. I am not a loser, but I like to surround myself with happy people. I am a dreamer, an energetic person and a busy bee: I play football, tennis and I am a member of the Wine Guild and the Sint-Joris Guild.

I studied Physical Education and Personal Training in Brugge. I taught at the KTA and in De Bevertjes in Oedelem. Teaching became part of my life and I also enjoyed it very much. When my father asked me to join the company, it was a very difficult choice. I chose the family business and never regretted it, I met a lot of new friends and developed a new passion for travel.

In the meantime I traveled to 32 different countries. I am of good descent, but traveling has taught me real humility. And the insight that there were so many opportunities for growth and change that were also feasible in Brugge. I did not want to criticize from the sidelines anymore, so I took the step into politics. Why now? Because I became the father of a beautiful girl and I want her to grow up in a dynamic, livable and safe city.

I want to make this world a better place. As Dr. King said "If you cannot fly, run; if you cannot run, walk; if you cannot walk, crawl; but at least keep moving." I will keep trying, believing and persevering... even if I can only achieve a fraction of my dreams! I sincerely believe that if you can stop for a moment, think about helping someone and then actually doing it, the world would be a better place.

What would you never change in Brugge?

I will always continue to "fight" for the historic beauty of the city but also for the romantic feeling that goes with it. I am still young but certainly see the difference with 10 years ago. I have been working in our family business for 11 years now and I have noticed a serious difference.

We work in tourism ourselves, so the influx of tourists certainly benefits us. What we do notice is that the tourists (by cruise and bus tourism) don’t have time to really admire our city. "They come and go as it were".
Are there more tourists than before? Yes, probably, but because they are limited in time, they not only spend less, but our city loses the charm it was once known for.

What I don’t want to change, you ask? I do not want to see Brugge turned into an amusement park. Brugge is close to my heart and if we continue like this, without finding for the right balance, our city will end in its glory. Too much mass tourism causes fewer residents because of the inconvenience. We have to look at what makes our city better, not worse; both for the visitor, the trader and the resident.

What would you definitely change in Brugge?

What I would change is the image that Brugge is "dead" in the evening. There is still much to do after the stores close. However, the city government should also be open to new ideas and/or projects. The city should also offer support through co-helping. So, no monopoly for a select group of people for whom "everything is allowed and everything is possible" but instead an open-minded approach. Don’t send people walking, but help them and in that way you can keep your young enterprising people in Brugge and make the city more lively and dynamic.

What is your favorite café/restaurant in Brugge?

This is a difficult question because there are quite a few. I like to eat out and I also like to have a drink after work or catch up with friends. I know that many will think "that’s a diplomatic answer" but it is true. Every café has its charms and serves a certain situation.

There are also several restaurants that can satisfy my hunger. I think that every café and restaurant located in Brugge do their utmost to provide Brugge and tourists with a beautiful afternoon/evening. At least that is my opinion, because anyone who does not have that attitude, shouldn’t work in the touristic sector.

Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?

When the city government finally realizes that things can be done differently and better, I am convinced that Brugge can blossom into a "Jewel" within the cities of Europe.

If you didn't live in Brugge, where would you live and why?

I like living here but if I had to live elsewhere, it would be Melbourne in Australia. Why? When I visited Australia, I was surprised by the friendliness of the population, I have never experienced that anywhere else.

Michiel & Sofie & Emma
