I first met Janis & Laila in 2012 a little while after opening my photo tour and parking up my bike by the Vismarkt (Fish Market) where they set up to make & sell their lovely scarves. I can't remember exactly what got us talking, but whatever it was it broke the ice and we were on our way to friendship.
Such nice people. Such beautiful work. Such a pleasure to see them in Spring when they're back from Latvia with a whole new rainbow of scarves and moments to share.
"You keep doing you" Janis & Laila, it makes Brugge that much brighter and we love you for it. 🙂

What would you never change about Brugge?
We would never change the historically valuable buildings, bridges, squares, parks, canals and the Fish market with most of its daily inhabitants.
What would you definitely change about Brugge?
We would totally change the false "Made in Belgium" crap - "handmade" lace, which is actually made in China, this is not honest business.
Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?
In 20 years Brugge should be a nice place to live, visit and stay, with friendly, honest people who have not fallen down to the cheap level just in order to make fast money, taking into consideration the real historical, cultural and intellectual values. The development should be sustainable, with a long term view. This means a lot of analysing.
What’s your favorite place to eat/drink in Brugge?
Our favourite places to drink in Brugge are the ‘Hollandse Vismijn’ and ’ToBe’.
For eating we choose the pizza and pasta place ‘Trium’ and Frituur ‘De Gentpoort’, these places fill you up and they are affordable.
If you didn’t live in Brugge, where would you live and why?
If we don't live in Brugge, we live in Latvia.
Wat zou je nooit veranderen aan Brugge?
Ik pleit voor het behoud van de historisch waardevolle gebouwen, de bruggen, pleinen, parken en kanalen. En natuurlijk de Vismarkt en hun straatverkopers.
Wat zou je zeker veranderen aan Brugge?
Weg met die valse "Made in Belgium" -troep, de zogenaamde "handgemaakte" kant die eigenlijk in China gefabriceerd wordt. Dit is geen eerlijke handel en het is nefast voor de klanten.
Waar zie je Brugge over 20 jaar?
In 20 jaar zou Brugge een mooie plek moeten zijn om te wonen, te bezoeken en te verblijven, met vriendelijke en eerlijke mensen. We mogen niet dalen tot een goedkoop niveau, puur om geldgewin.
We moeten blijvend rekening houden met de echte historische, culturele en intellectuele waarden. De ontwikkeling moet duurzaam zijn, met een langetermijnvisie. Dat betekent veel analyseren.
Wat is je favoriete plek om te eten / drinken in Brugge?
Onze favoriete plekken om te drinken in Brugge zijn de 'Hollandse Vismijn' en 'ToBe'.
Om te eten kiezen we voor het pizza- en pasta restaurant 'Trium' en Frituur 'De Gentpoort'. Je kan er lekker eten voor een klein prijsje.
Als je niet in Brugge woonde, waar zou je dan wonen en waarom?
Wanneer we niet in Brugge zijn, wonen we in Letland.
