Faces of Brugge - Christian Campers

Christian Campers of Exceller Bikes

Meeting Chris:

I first met Christian by dropping into his bicycle shop Exceller Bikes a few years ago to see if they had jerseys (shirts) of Brugge for my tour guests who were looking for a souvenir with cycling style.

Friendly from word one and with a classy vibe that shines out in everything I see from this man, It's been a joy to get to know him both for work and pleasure... And repairs to the Andy-Mobile of course! 😉

Repairs aside, always a joy to chat to Chris when he's not busy and talk about this city that we both love and share. We're both a bit old school and when we chat I appreciate his honesty and clarity (aka "being straight up") towards helping me understand/have a good bitch about this quirky little city. Even better that he added a café to the shop, now we have coffee to wash down the discussion! 🙂

Keep cool Chris, your shop is a shining light towards growing an even more beautiful Brugge with local businesses that care about the community.

Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.

Born and raised Bruggeling. Married to Greetje Schaeverbeke for 30 years. Teacher Training French - History - Latin at the Normaalschool in the St. Jorisstraat (now Howest)
Worked for more than 30 years in a radius of 250 meters around the Burg: Boatman at the shipping company Klein Venetië at the Rozenhoedkaai, administration and sales at jeweler Peter Quijo in the Breidelstraat and now it’s been 8 years that I have my own bike shop at the Mallebergplaats. I know the neighborhood "pretty good", as it is called.

What would you never change in Brugge?

The double character of the city: vibrant tourist center with hundreds of different nationalities during the d

ay, sleeping provincial town in the evening. Although that was even more pronounced 10 years ago. And it was pleasantly busy in the summer. Now it feels like Cairo or Rio. Too many people.

What would you definitely change in Brugge?

Return the Unesco World Heritage List to Unesco. It is completely eroded and outdated. When the label meant something, so many years ago, valuable sites such as Abu Simbel and Giza were on the list. Brugge is very beautiful, but is has been made artificially "old" to attract tourists.

UNESCO is popping everything up on that list. It therefore has absolutely no value for me anymore. Compare it with the overly used term "Limited Edition"; If you make 10 of it, it is really exclusive. If you make 10,000, it has no value anymore. For the development of a normal livable / living city, Unesco is almost strangely limiting. All initiatives are simply refused on the basis of Unesco World Heritage.

What's your favorite café and / or restaurant in Brugge?

Home.

Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?

Unfortunately! I see Brugge as a kind of Mont Saint Michel. No real residents anymore, only second-stayers. Only tourists shops and cheap eateries, flooded by the millions with "Waffle People".

The only question is: how does this arise? Do we start the cheap - mass - tourism tour because the question arises? Or do we get it because we offer it?

If you didn’t live in Brugge, where would you live and why?

Everywhere where there is life. Antwerp, New York, Los Angeles, London. But with a second stay in a quiet area. Matter of balancing my Yin and Yang.

Thuis.

Waar zie je Brugge in 20 jaar?

Helaas!

Antwerpen, New York, Los Angeles, London.
