Meeting Mercedes:
I've had the pleasure to briefly meet Mercedes a few times now around Brugge, only since 2018 but had heard about her and her care for Brugge before that.
It was clear from when I met her in winter that she has a determination and drive, kindly sharing her thoughts on city management long before the heat of the political season had started as well as a quick photo shoot.
Strength was also apparent in that first meeting... Mercedes didn't even hesitate when the only closeby cafe was De Hollandse Vismijn, that's a very "red cafe" for the local Socialists and she's Liberal blue all the way with the OpenVLD+! 😀
Keeping fighting the good fight Mercedes, Brugge needs it and always good to see the women step up!

Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.
I am Mercedes Van Volcem, "Desje" for the friends. I am a real local, raised by my parents in Sint-Pieters and Kruisabele.
Ever since childhood, even though I come from a modest home, I always had a lot of interest in my studies. I noticed that though that there was progress in life, I could accomplish things and also gain freedom.
My studies brought me to Ghent, where I studied law. After my studies, I started working as a lawyer in Brugge. In addition, I also noticed that I had a passion to investigate society, to give it form and improve it. So, in 2000 I took my first steps in politics and was elected for city council. The following two elections, I became a minister and a Flemish representative respectively. It’s been a long road and now I want to go for the mayorship of Bruges.
What would you never change about Brugge?
The people of course. We are diverse, hard workers, but also enjoy life. I love my city, and I notice that many people from Brugge are also very proud of their city. That connects me with the people who live around me. That connects all of us in Brugge.
What would you definitely change about Brugge?
Because I love my city so much, I want to improve it and keep it pleasant. I noticed that we are facing challenges. The mobility hasn’t been thought through. The challenges associated with tourism have not been addressed.
Brugge must remain pleasant, both for tourists, traders and residents. So I have a plan ready that will bring Brugge back into balance. I present that plan to the voters, so that our city continues to attract high-quality tourism. That is pleasant for the local and the visitor, and it is good for commerce.

Trium, Lieven, Estaminet, Lokkedize, Rockfort and Cookies
Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?
I see a modern city that has put itself on the international map . I see high-quality events with lots of charisma. I also see a diverse city, where both elderly people and the youth still present. A sparkling, dynamic and pleasant Brugge of the future can charm every group.
If you did not live in Brugge, then where (and why)?
Copenhagen. A city in balance and tailored to everyone.
What are your 3 top priorities as potential Burgemeester van Brugge 2018?
The local has endured too much due to the poor coordination of the many roadworks and the ill-considered mobility. I will organize this better myself.
As a second point I want to lift tourism to a higher level. Less day tourism, more residential tourism, more quality seekers.
And the final point is to ensure that a blue-green model is created. Where companies get the space to undertake, to invest - but also to experiment - with new technology and new economies. I see these business nicely and close together, with lots of relaxing green. Remember: entrepreneurs are also asking for sustainability.
What are the biggest challenges for Brugge as a city?
We are in a well-defined inner city. With bridges that are open too often. And moreover, the largest part of brugge is historical cultural heritage.
The challenge is to find the balance, to keep the city dynamic and attractive for young people. Because when the young families leave, we will eventually become a dead city and that’s something nobody wants.
What initiatives do you propose to both the small local businesses, as well as the overall growth of the beautiful Brugge for the next generation?
It is remarkable that this is the question of the people. Our economy program largely revolves around this question. We have a plan ready to restate/keep that balance.
We want to focus on the manufacturing economy, but also on new technologies. Our program explains how we see that, how we want to profile ourselves in the niche of 'the internet of things'. We want this to go hand in hand with small projects, start-ups and things that are very refined, tailored made and authentic.

Ik ben Mercedes Van Volcem, Desje voor de vrienden. Ik ben een echte Brugse, opgegroeid bij mijn ouders in Sint-Pieters en Kruisabele. Ook al ben ik afkomstig van een bescheiden thuis, sinds kind af aan had ik altijd zeer veel interesse in mijn studies. Ik merkte dat ik daardoor vooruit kon geraken in het leven, dingen kon bereiken en je ook vrijheid kon verkrijgen.
Mijn studies hebben mij dan ook even naar Gent gebracht, waar ik rechten gestudeerd heb. Na mijn studies ben ik beginnen werken als advocate in Brugge. Daarnaast merkte ik ook dat ik een passie had om de maatschappij te bestuderen, vorm te geven en te verbeteren. In 2000 waagde ik mijn eerste stappen in de politiek en werd ik verkozen in de gemeenteraad. De twee verkiezingen daaropvolgend werd ik respectievelijk schepen en Vlaams volksvertegenwoordiger.
Ik legde een hele weg af en nu doe ik graag een gooi naar het burgemeesterschap van Brugge.
Wat zou je nooit veranderen aan Brugge?
De mensen natuurlijk. We zijn divers, harde werkers, maar genieten ook van het leven. Ik houd van mijn stad, en ik merk dat veel Bruggelingen ook erg fier zijn op hun stad. Dat verbindt me met de mensen die rondom mij wonen. Dat verbindt ons allemaal in Brugge.
Wat zou je zeker veranderen aan Brugge?
Omdat we net zo van onze stad houden, wil ik hem ook verbeteren of aangenaam houden. We merken dat we voor uitdagingen staan. Zo loopt de mobiliteit vast. Deze is niet doordacht. Ook de uitdagingen die met het toerisme gepaard gaan, worden niet aangepakt. Brugge moet aangenaam blijven, zowel voor toeristen, handelaars als inwoners. Ik heb dus een plan klaar om de stad terug in balans te brengen. Daarmee trek ik naar de kiezer. Zodat onze stad kwalitatief toerisme blijft aantrekken, dat is aangenaam voor de bezoeker, goed voor de commerce, maar ook aangenaam voor wie hier woont.

Waar zie je Brugge in 20 jaar?
Ik zie een moderne stad die zich internationaal op de kaart heeft gezet met kwalitatieve evenementen met uitstraling. Ik zie
ook een diverse stad, waar zowel ouderen graag hun oude dagen slijten, maar waar ook de jeugd nog aanwezig is. Deze laatste
groep gaat nu te vaak weg, dat is voor niemand leuk. Een bruisend, dynamisch en aangenaam Brugge van de toekomst
kan elke groep bekoren.
Als je niet in Brugge zou wonen, waar dan wel (en waarom)?
Kopenhagen. Een stad in balans en op maat van iedereen.
Wat zijn je 3 top prioriteiten als potentiële Burgemeester van Brugge in 2018?
De Bruggeling heeft te veel gezweet. Door een slechte coördinatie van de werken en de ondoordachte mobiliteit. Dit organiseer
ikzelf beter.
Als tweede punt til ik het toerisme naar een hoger niveau. Minder dagjestoerisme, meer verblijfstoerisme, meer kwaliteitszoekers.
En als laatste punt wil ervoor zorgen dat een blauw-groen model ontstaat. Waar bedrijven de ruimte krijgen te ondernemen, te investeren - maar ook te experimenteren – met nieuwe technologie en nieuwe economieën. Ik zie deze bedrijfsruimtes aan elkaar geritst met mooi en ontspannend groen. Vergeet niet: ook ondernemers zijn vragende partij voor duurzaamheid.
Wat zijn de grootste uitdagingen voor Brugge als een stad?
We zitten met een welomlijnde binnenstad. Met bruggen die vaak openstaan. Bovendien is het grootste deel historisch cultureel erfgoed. Het is de uitdaging de balans te vinden, om binnen dit gegeven de stad dynamisch te houden en aantrekkelijk voor jonge mensen. Want als de jonge gezinnen wegtrekken, dan worden we op termijn een dode stad. Iets wat niemand wil.
Welke initiatieven stel je voor om zowel de kleine lokale bedrijven, maar alsook de algehele groei van het prachtige Brugge te helpen voor de volgende generatie?
Opmerkelijk dat dit juist de vraag van het volk is. Ons programma economie draait voor een groot deel rond deze vraag. We stellen daar een plan voorop om juist die balans te bewaren.
We willen inzetten op de maak-economie, maar ook op de nieuwe technologieën. In ons programma staat uitgelegd hoe we dat juist zien,
hoe we ons willen profileren in de niche van ‘the internet of things’. We willen dit laten samengaan met kleine projecten, start-ups en authentieke zaken die juist erg verfijnd, maat gericht en authentiek zijn.
